Computers to help fight poor health conditions in Zimbabwe

The campaign is being coordinated by the Embassy of Zimbabwe in Ottawa, and it is being led by the Zimbabwean ambassador F. Z. Chideya. On Wednesday July 30, a meeting was held at the Embassy office, with leaders of the Zimbabwean community in Canada, to discuss ways of raising funds to support the acquisition of computers and software to be shipped to Zimbabwe.

Ambassador Chideya said that “the strengthening of institutions, especially in the field of health and education, will go a long way in contributing to the much needed economic turnaround in Zimbabwe.” She has visited CompuCorps.org recently when a shipment of 100 computers was sent to schools in Zimbabwe. The computers were received as donations from Canadian corporations and refurbished by CompuCorps.org with the help of IT volunteers from many IT companies in Ottawa.

Bill Marvel, CompuCorps.org’s Executive Director, says that “by sponsoring 5 computers a company can help more than 50 people with AIDS, for example.” Corporations with business in Zimbabwe, such as Canadian mining companies, are being contacted to help with the fundraising effort. If you feel your company can help in this crucial humanitarian effort, please contact either CompuCorps.org or the Embassy of Zimbabwe.
